I'll spare you the intricate details of German teacher training and career paths, but I moved up a level today. Meaning that I 'll never ever have to write another paper or pass an exam. Fuck Yeah! Downside is that my contract ends in February. Upside is that wherever my next job will be, I'll earn about three times as much as I do now.

Broad. What's the point in teaching isolated German history? It may be a bit focused on Europe though, but that comes with the continent I'm on. So the American Civil War is more of a side note for example. America comes into the focus when it comes to all post-war/cold war stuff.

because the history of the German people is very interesting.
Take the civil war you brought up, somewhere around 200,000 union troops were from what is now Germany. Entire regiments of all german soldiers. There were Prussian officers (among others) observing the union's tactics. Tactics that would turn WWI into what it was.
Point is Germans have been an important influence throughout history, especially on the USA. The history is so much more than the world wars.

Good points! What we are doing is not so much the "what" but more the "why" or "how" and the "what does this mean to us" thing.

That's the best way to do it.
